Freelance Runway Calculator: Savings, Slow Months and Emergency Costs

Calculate how long savings cover a monthly shortfall, compare three income scenarios, and see the limits of a fixed cash model.

Runway is the time accessible savings can cover a monthly cash shortfall. It answers a narrow question: “If these numbers stayed the same, when would this savings pool run out?” It does not decide whether you should resign or predict future client income.

Use the same currency in every field. Enter income available after business costs and the provisions you need to make. Exclude money reserved for other obligations from savings. The calculations run locally in your browser; no account or saved financial profile is created.

Fixed scenarios · no resignation score

Calculate savings runway

Fictional starting values. Use one currency and your own consistent cost assumptions.

Blank optional income fields mean zero. Conservative and recurring income cannot exceed normal income in this model.

Understand the calculation

With no income, runway equals savings divided by monthly expenses. When income is below expenses, it equals savings divided by the difference. When income covers expenses, the fixed model does not draw down savings; that is different from claiming permanent financial security.

Expenses 75,000; income 75,0000No savings draw in this scenario

Normal and conservative income are separate scenarios, not amounts to add together. Recurring income is already included in normal income. Its coverage percentage describes how much of expenses it would cover; the calculator does not add it a second time.

Include the expenses a salary used to cover

Write down essential household costs, debt payments, work connectivity, software, equipment provision, and benefits you would need to replace. Avoid counting the same business cost both as an expense and as a deduction from income. State which convention you used so another person can reproduce the calculation.

If the monthly total is unusually low because a large bill arrives once a year, either reserve that bill separately or allocate it across your planning period. Do not silently assume it disappears during the transition. A fixed monthly model cannot show the exact timing of a large bill.

Test a late payment and an emergency separately

For an unpaid invoice, use zero until money is available for the period you are modelling. A signed agreement is useful evidence of planned work but is not cash in the bank. If income depends mostly on one customer, run a scenario with that customer's contribution removed.

For a one-off emergency of PKR 60,000, reduce the fictional savings from PKR 300,000 to PKR 240,000. At PKR 75,000 expenses and no income, the result becomes 3.2 months. Do not also add the same emergency to every month's expenses unless you intend a recurring cost.

A decision record to keep beside the result

Download the transition decision worksheet. Record the source of each number, which income might stop, obligations outside the model, the next review date, and an action if collected income falls below your assumption.

For example: “Continue part-time for the next review period; measure total project time and confirm the equipment replacement cost.” This is a specific decision that can change with evidence. “The calculator says I am ready” delegates far too much to a simplified formula.

What the result leaves out

The model does not forecast inflation, changing prices, debt interest, benefits, client retention, investment returns or applicable taxes. There is no universal number of savings months that makes resignation safe. A displayed 20 months can shrink quickly if your monthly gap changes.

The workbook offers an offline version. Use the working-arrangement guide to consider personal constraints and the operating-cost review for the business routine. Significant financial decisions deserve a review of your actual situation by someone qualified to help.
